    Not Starting

First off, it's an 86 325es. My buddy gave me the car after he replaced the head gasket and couldn't get it running. I'm getting both fuel and spark. It turns over really easy, but never actually fires. Where should I look next?

    Thanks a lot

If you're sure you have fuel and spark, check timing of the cam, crank, and make sure the distributor is put together correctly.

I appreciate your help. I checked the timing, it's spot on. The distributer is fine. I haven't found any loose wires. The ground from the body to the oil pan is on. Any other ideas?

Well, if you have fuel and spark and correct timing, it should start. You've missed something. Check the TDC mark on the crank, TDC mark on the cam with both lobes of the cam for #1 cylender pointing down, distributor rotor pointing at the terminal inside the cap that lines up with the #1 plug wire... make double sure it's got fuel and spark, make double sure it's got compression...

You're right. I just got done checking the compression, and there isn't any. I'll be breaking it down tomorrow to see what the problem is.

Check the valve adjustment first, there is a possibility that the head wasn't put together right and the valves aren't closing.

I know you checked the timing, but does the cam turn when you turn over the engine or turn the crank.

Why did the headgasket have to be changed?

I pulled the head and it turns out that all of the intake valves are bent.

.......So does anyone know who has the best price on valves?

Someone messed up their timing belt. 180º off I bet.

Yep. It was pretty bad. If anyone cares, Pelican Parts had the best price on valves that I could find.
