Driver's door opens randomly while driving

This is an odd one, just curious if anyone has any input!

So my 91 318is' drivers door is often a little tricky to close when the cabin is sealed (i.e. windows and sunroof are closed). If I close it with lots of force, it seems to pop back open. If I close it gently, it tends to close just fine. Something about the cabin pressure I would imagine, that leads me to believe that something in the door latch itself is severely worn . . .

While driving (i'd say once every 7 or 8 trips), the drivers' side door will pop partially open. It's still partially latched, so it's not like the door swings out and I get flung out onto the road at high rates of speed (luckily). I just open it and close it at the next stop light, and usually it stays just fine.

Anyone know if this is a common problem? Anything in particular that is likely to be the culprit? I'd imagine it's something in the latch system that either needs adjustment or replacing due to wear over the years. I'm just not sure what normal looks like in comparison to what i've got. Any thoughts?

I did a series of searches, and can't find anything in the archives that's even close to the problem i'm having. If it has been addressed in the past, i'd appreciate a link.

    Thanks in advance!

The latch could be out of adjustment, or (just as likely) the lock/latch in the door is worn. I'd suggest getting a new latch/lock assembly to start with.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

That's what i'm afraid of - $251 from realoem for a replacement door lock mechanism. Obviously less from a junkyard or parts car, but still. I'll play around with it and see if any adjustments can be made!
