Actually, Dom, I WAS granny shifting and double-clutching.

So my shifting has been getting worse, and today it's just about impossible. Here are the symptoms.

While driving, getting into R, 1, 2 is about damn near impossible. Full force is required, and sometimes it sounds like the clutch isn't in all the way, even though I'm standing on the pedal. It also grinds some shifts like the car isn't out of gear. Coming out of these gears is loud and obnoxious - the lever slams out of gear. Also, I've noticed with the clutch pedal completely depressed, and trying to put it in first, I can feel the car start to move forward before the lever is all the way in 1st - almost like the clutch hasn't disengaged.

4 and 5 are easier, but certainly not the way they should be.

Once IN gear, things are fine. Car performs well - no grinding, popping out of gear, etc.

In trying to get this to work better, I started pumping the clutch two or three times before putting it in gear - this helps immensely. For now, this is the solution.

Now, is this a simple case of needing to bleed the clutch, or needing to fill the tranny? Or is the tranny's syncros gone/going? If pumping the clutch helps, it leads me to believe this is clutch/hydraulics related, not tranny related.

One other thing - pedal feel is MUCH harder - takes about all I've got to push the thing in, and letting it back out you can feel it fighting to stay depressed.

I've got a tranny I could throw in - just don't want to - I'd rather keep it for myself ;)

Any help would be great...thanks guys.

Sounds like a clutch problem, not tranny. My guess is that you just need to replace the entire clutch. I dunno for sure though. You may just need to bleed the system. Good luck.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure this tranny is fine - you really can't kill them, and this one was well cared for. Only 233k on it too. Where can I find directions to bleed the clutch? Gotta find a friend, right? Like brakes? Never bled a clutch before.

bleed screw on the slave cylinder at the tranny, driver side up front by the bellhousing. Same way you bleed the brakes :) Pump clutch pedal till no air is there and keep the resevoir full :)

Sounds fairly straightforward. So basically same as a brake bleed cept I'm bleeding the slave cylinder instead of a caliper.

Sweet. The clutch and brake fluid share the same res, so I use Dot 3 or dot 4?

Bleeding isn't going to fix it. You need a clutch including the throwout bearing, for the second time I've told you now. Do the damn thing already. ;)

Common sense- It's the new 'gifted'

Nope. I'm ignoring you. You're wrong.

              :)

I REALLY DON'T WANNA REPLACE THE CLUTCH on a friggin $500 car I'm selling in a few weeks. Oy.

Let's pretend I do man up and do this. I've never dropped a tranny, and I've never changed a clutch. Is this a DIY or not? Is there a nice shiny writeup with pretty pictures somewhere?

I strongly dislike you Adam, if you're right ;)

is that car an eta? if you're trying to replace it with a used one just so you can sell it, I can see if i still have my old eta clutch laying around somewhere lol

Of course it's an eta. I've got 4 etas. And no i's.

BAHHHH HE'S GOT NO EYES?!?!?! HE'S A BLIND FREAK!

                  Anyways.

I've got two trannies just a'kickin around - one has 285k on it, but I just replaced the clutch 20k ago - that was to be my m50 swap tranny. Then I have a 200k tranny that feels like it's got a recent clutch - that was to be my backup :) Clutches aren't too expensive - I bought the one in the 285k for 136 shipped, sachs, full kit.

PS - definitely buying that bumper ColdAccord - just sold my e36 trunk lid to a guy in Buffalo, and he wants it delivered ;)
