    Help! Engine not running right.

I have a 87 325i that i picked up a few months ago. It has 92k on the clock all original, and I havent had the money to get it serviced yet. Im not sure if the timing belt and water pump were done yet, but im pretty sure that is not what is acting up.

This only happens sometimes, Id say about 50 percent of the time or less. When I accellerate it either accelerates slow, or putts and then hauls ass. I was thinking possibly coil packs or new fuel pump, but I am by no means a mechanic, and am new to e30s.

If theres anyone out there that experienced this problem with there m20, or mechanics that could lead me in the right direction as to what it could be it would be greatly appreciated.

Also if it were to be the coil packs or fuel pump how much would that cost for parts and how difficult would that be to replace. I know a bit about the coil packs, and have friends in the vw scene that are pretty keen on their mechanics, but i havent had a chance to talk to them lately.

This car's engine has a single coil and distribution, not coil packs.

The symptoms you describe could be from any of a number of causes. The first things I'd do (after replacing the timing belt and water pump) would be to check for intake leaks and run the fuel system tests in the Bentley.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

like I said I havent had it serviced and i know that they need the timing belt and water pump around that mileage, so there is a possibility it is done. And your saying you dont think it would be the fuel pump or the coil. How much would the work you described cost a shop, or the parts cost and I do it myself?
