Easier to pull the entire engine/tranny, or just the tranny.

When replacing the rear main seal? I just got done removing an re-installing the tranny in my 325i for the 3rd time since I've owned it. Now there is oil leaking form the bellhousing..so it seems the rear main seal has gotten fubard.

Dropping the tranny with the car on rhino ramps and jackstands was a total bitch. Is it easier to just pull whole shebang?

Easier to just remove the tranny. Take the transmission brace off, tilt the whole thing down and you can reach the top bolts with a few wobble extensions.

I'm a pro at pulling it off now (if I do it again this will be the 4th time)...I'm more thinking if its easier to pull it out the top, rather than lay on a concrete floor all weekend with 4 inches of clearance to work in.

All weekend? Buy an electric impact gun and get a friend. Me and my friend can pull a trans off in about an hour and a half laying on cold concrete floor.
