OK, what am I doing wrong with the thermostat o-ring?

The o-ring type gasket is split, I figured the outer edge of the thermostat fits into this. But, the thermostat alone is a perfect fit. How do I get this big o-ring to fit inside the housing? What am I doing wrong?

Are you sure? I called bavauto, told them what I was doing and they said it is correct. Obviously, they could be wrong. This o-ring is not the typical solid looking "o-ring". It has a slit all the way around it and the thermostat is able to go inside this slit, so that some of the o-ring is behind the t-stat and some in front. Imagine a thick o-ring with a slit all around it and the t-stat seems to appear to fit into that slit. Why else would they have the slit?

never seen it like that for a e30. maybe put the o-ring in first- and then get the lip of the thermostat in the slit. its usually done as MR 325 said

(your saying the thermostat sits in the o-ring?)

It does appear that the t-stat sits in the o-ring. I am going to try putting the o-ring in first and then use some tools to slip the o-ring around the t-stat. This o-ring is thick and has a slit in it all the way around.

I think you got an incorrect o-ring. All the T-stat kits I've gotten have o-rings with a square profile that go between the thermostat and the t-stat housing cap.

This does have a square profile. It is not rounded and smooth. Maybe it is just the way the mold is? When I removed the original, it came out in 2 pieces, as if the slit went all the way through. It was like I removed to halves of the o-ring. I just can't remember if half was in front and half behind. I figured this would be straight forward and did not pay that close attention. I did find it odd that the o-ring came out in 2 identical pieces.

The seal should be between the thermostat and the thermostat housing cap.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

                    jlevie,
If that is the case, then the stat does not go in the slit. You may be right. I will take a look tomorrow. Have you ever seen an o-ring that is sort of 2 pieces like this?

                      Yes.
I had a ford escort gt at one point, and it had a gasket just like what you are refering too. The t-stat actually fit in the gasket so there was a seal on both sides.

Never seen it like that on an e30 though.

Well, the gasket I pulled out, came out in 2 identical halves, as if it was just like what I have now, but it split into two. So, maybe the gasket it designed to go as MR 325 has stated, but it is the odd type of o-ring. I will probably call bavauto tomorrow and have them pull another off the shelf and check. But, it sounds like I should put the t-stat in, against the housing and then put the o-ring and then the cover. Correct?

Yes, you are correct. It should not be an "weird gasket" either. It uses a pretty standard looking o ring.

Yep, wrong damn gasket. I went to the Advance and I can't believe they actually had a Felpro 0-ring for a t-stat for our cars. It fits like it should. I will chuck the other one before I make a mistake and attempt to use it some years later. Thanks guys.
