temperature gauge goes up a bit when idling

I've noticed that when I'm stuck in really heavy traffic, i.e., barely moving and just idling for ~5+ minutes, the temperature gauge goes up a bit past the center line. After I get moving it goes back down to normal. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Bad thermostat? Something else?

Most common cause of heating up during idle is a fan clutch.

On a hot day, it is normal for an engine with a mechanical fan to register above normal temperatures when idling, especially if you just left the last stoplight like you were at the drag strip. On the very hottest days (like today, 100 degrees and 75% humidity, W T F) after some freeway running, I see one to two needle thicknesses past the middle of the gauge and it usually goes no further and decreases back to the middle within 10 seconds of driving again.
