Radiator fan supposely not opperating properly reason for A/C not cooling properly?

It was yesterday. VERY hot and humid.....The car was sitting for about 15-20 minutes while I chatted with the mechanic that JUST last week flushed out my system and recharged with R12 (already replaced with a refurbished compressor and replaced all seals, and R12 specific evaporater valve).

After all that in a very hot and humid day, it still was not cooling properly thus the reason I went to chat with him. Now, when I picked up the car last week it was rainy and not hot and humid while I was driving it home it got down to around 42 degrees.

So, yesterday during a very hot and humid day and not cooling like I thought it should, I drove to his shop. He turned off the car AND THEN spun the radiator fan. Which spun with him spinning by hand.

He stated that could be the reason as it is supposed to lock up and not freely allow him to move it.

The reason he believes thats the issue is that, while I was standing with him by the passenger side door. I saw (and never saw it before) and pointed out to him, that drips of waters was coming out of the plastic area where the passengers left leg would be if he was sitting in the passenger side seat.

He then said that is because the evaporator is probally freezing up and thats condensation and the radiator fan is not working like it is supposed to, to cool down the A/C evaporator component like it is supposed to. He said that I should run the fan on 3-4 as that would help with the build up of icing up.

He thinks that replacing the radiator fan and clutch would help with the idle A/C temp issue.

    What you guys think?

Yes. Mine doesn't cool that well sitting in traffic. Friend (long long time BMW mechanic) said the fan clutch was weak and not pulling enough air while idling. Works great on the interstate because lots more air flow across the condensor. Mine doesn't freeze up but the fan clutch can cause A/C issues.

Did you do the fix? If so, did it solve the sitting in traffic A/C issue? And where both talking about the radiator Engine Fan, correct? Not the condensor fan that is right behind the front grill. Want to make sure were talking about the same fan.

Yes the radiator engine fan. No, have not fixed it yet. One more thing on my to do list for this car.

I feel you. If its not one thing its another lol

the clutch fan will make the system not work as well as possible, but it will NOT cause the evaporator to freeze up. that would be a function of low airflow across the evaporator (bad blower fan). Most likely the dripping you saw was indeed condensation off the evaporator, and is perfectly normal. Cold air cannot hold as much moisture as warm air, hence it condenses on the evaporator and ducting, and the drain carries it away.

In hot weather both the aux fan and engine driven fan must be operating properly for the A/C to work well at idle. So yes, a bad fan clutch will reduce the performance of the A/C system (and run the risk of overheating the engine).
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Your auxilary fan is supposed to come on at low speed when the ac is on. If your fan is not working that needs to be fixed first. The main fan is more for engine cooling than anything.

I wanted to respond to some of your great and helpful comments:

                  1) My blower fan I believe is working correctly as blower speed 1-4 all turn on and blow.

                  2) "ScottieinAZ" you mentioned that the evaporator condensation is normal. But, is it normal that it was dripping down on the carpet area where a passenger leg would be located if they were sitting in the front passenger seat?

                  3) "wodcutr" The auxilary fan located right behind the grill comes on everytime I turn the A/C on. I wouldn't necessarly say it comes on at a low speed. It seems it is spinning pretty fast.

Also a added note:Even in extreme hot conditions and driving hard the tempature gauge in my cluster doesnt go past the middle (knock on wood). So, I am not at this point worried about the engine overheating. It is all have to do with the cooling performance of the A/C.

most likely the drain is plugged or the tube is broken. easy fix, just check the drain tubes

behind forward center console on the bottom of the HVAC unit are two rubber tubes. one pass side, one drivers. they dump out into the trans tunnel area under the car. check these for being either broken or clogged. you may have to remove some of the underseat ductwork to see the tubes.

tubes are #9 and 10 in this illustration

So, its behind the A/C sliders and that whole unit?

no, remove the center console, and you will find them going through the trans tunnel under the HVAC package. you dont have to remove anything on the dash, just have to get the center console out of the way
