Or it could be the bearing and/or retaining rings that hold your steering spindle inside the column housing. If those go bad, or are missing the the steering will feel loose and the spindle will rattle around inside the column.

Take the steering wheel off. I can't remember if you will have to remove the lock housing. I seem to recall that it does have to be removed before you are able to access those parts.

it is. its just RHD. Mine looks exactly like that.

Im guessing i'll have to take the whole damn column apart to get the outer sleeve off. The large tube you see in that photo isnt the column itself, it doesnt turn with the wheel.

Does anybody have experience with these "other " columns?

here you can see the difference between an airbag column and a non airbag column. There is no collar nut and no upper u-joint. There are bearings...shit.

why do they have to make this so difficult!!

bmw are over engineering but use shitty quality parts. This is why I love honda's!!!

It seem like a bearing or bushing gone bad in the shaft housing??

If you aren't missing any parts, it looks like you have a bad upper spindle bearing.

no definitive explanation of problem yet? How many miles are on car for this bearing to go bad?

Have you taken the car to a shop yet? They probably know what's wrong.
