Car wont start - No power at DME Relay ( SOLVED )

    Hello R3v,

I am still new around here but not new to forums cars etc ( still waiting to do a formal introduction ).

So after lots of searching and reading ( which has guided me in the right direction ) im still a little unsure what went wrong.

    Car - 89 325is

Battery was dead ( cars been sitting for a bit ) I jump started it and it jumped right up and I let it warm up. Drove a block it stalled and now will not start..

So after much searching I found to check for a bad fuel or main relay. So first I check the main relay :

I turn this whole cluster upside down and try probing the biggest of the middle 3 wires ( I probed everyone with the key on or off ) nothing has power via my test light.
Even tried bypassing the relay but i figured with no power that also doesnt matter ( jumped 87a 87b 30 ) 3 middle wires. NADA

The battery is dead but I have jumper cables on the car, It cranks but nada. I didn't check for spark cause I figured if the main relay doesn't have power I have a bigger problem to fix first.

Could this be crank position sensor? or something else?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I keep searching and testing.

    Thanks,

Step one would be to charge or replace the battery. Then check to see if there is power at the main relay on pin 30. If not, the fusible link is probably bad.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

      Jlevie,

Thanks for the reply, I have read many good informative posts on here by you already.

I have the battery on a charger now, Will check for power on pin 30 asap with the battery charged.
With jumper cables pin 30 has no power and the car just cranks and cranks.

Also when jumping both 87's & 30 I still get no power, Car started 100% last week and when it died would never start back up.

      PS.

Where is the fusible link to check for being bad?

The fusible link is in the small wire that connects to the battery positive post, near the battery.

Little bit of an update :

Charged battery so now she cranks nicely on her own but still when I probe the main relay ( furthest towards hood ) at pins 87 & 30 the middle row I have no power it seems. I know my test light works cause If I probe other pins with the KEY in on position it lights up.

I would test fuel / spark but with no power at main relay I dont think it would matter.

No power at pin 30 of the main relay suggests that there is a problem with the fusible link or with the smaller of the two wires fom the battery positive post.

By the battery post you mean the one at the passenger side firewall im assuming where the 2/0 gauge wire comes from the trunk
and into a some sort of distribution block with 2 smaller like 8 gauge wires?

At this post I get power if I touch the post / connector ( 2/0 gauge wire ) but not power at the smaller of the 2 bolts.

ding ding maybe this is my issue would be a nice suprise.

I looked briefly for the fusible link in the trunk but I think I have to empty the trunk to see it I could not find it with the mess.

I will be looking into issues at that post later this afternoon.

                  Fusible Link

The fusible is covered in heat shrink. Its usually 12 inches from the battery on the smaller wire. If you remove the side panel in the trunk by the battery and follow the positive wire you will see it. Also if you search forum for fusible link you will find pictures for sure.

Ding, ding, we have a winner. The small wire that feeds the small post of the power point includes the fusible link. That wire (and post) suppies power to the engine management sstem (and main relay).

Jim I owe you a beer. Made a small jumper wire ( just for a quick test ) from the small to big wire on the distribution block up front passenger side and she started right up! What do you replace the fusible link with a fuse holder like this :

So excited now ill start reading and doing the basic maintenance starting with the timing belt / water pump!

You guys rock would of never figured this out or atleast not for a while!

                        Thanks Again!
