SSK Problem

Alright, I got my z4 shifter in, but when I shift into 3rd, 4th and 5th gear, the selector rod rubs on the harmonic balancer on the driveshaft. Is there anything I can do about this so It doesnt rub, I REALLY dont want to have to take off the exhaust, drop the heat shields, drop the drive shaft and take off the harmonic balancer (it is a waste of time, and takes a long time to undo the exhuast). Any Ideas? Anybody else have this problem?

PS: The z4 kit is frickin badass, you dont understand unless you have it.

i believe you just have to modify the selector rod by giving it a slight bend so that it clears the harmonic balancer? I think that's the solution, but I'm not sure what the harmonic balancer is... are you talking about the guibo? that rubber thing that connects the driveshaft?

there should be instructions on how to modify the selector rod on the UUC website.

Isn't there a metal casing that is supposed to surround the guibo?
There was one on mine, and I just removed it because it made installing the driveshaft a bitch, and served no apparent purpose.

If you removed that, maybe there would be enough clearance, but as you said you don't want to do the work, lol.
Try bending it, I guess....

remove the balancer....

it serves no real purpose that is of concern to any of us.

above that, its weighs like 3lbs, thats rotational weight. it takes hp to spin it.

I'm not talking about removing the rubber portion; on mine there was some sort of a metal shroud that surrounded the guibo. Thats what I removed.

You might be able to get away with removing the guibo, but it will put more stress on your driveline components, and it will be much harder to shift smoothly. Thats what I love about my BMW, it can be shifted without any occilations, as opposed to my brothers 90 integra which is tricky to shift without some jolting.

But if this a track car, or you don't care about smoothness then attempt to remove the guibo. I would see if the shroud I was refering to is in the way, if not I would just bend the shaft a hair.

It's pretty damn easy to just give the selector rod a little bend. I had to do it on my car with the z3 ssk. But I'm curious to hear how easy the harmonic balancer-dude-thing is to pull off, because I might just do that when I replace my guibo.

You'd get the best results by both bending the lower selector rod and removing the balancer if you have a really short shifter.
You can also have a second cup welded on top of the one on the upper selector shaft. I had that setup in my car for a little while

I got it to work, I just bent the selector rod for now, and when I have to remove teh driveshaft in the future, I'll take of the balancer (shroud) then. Here is a picture of how much I bent it. I got underneath the car, and marked exactly where it hit, then bent using UUC's directions (3 sockets and a vice).
