    1986 air flow sensor code

I recently bought this 1986 325es with a bad water pump, i'm coming from DSMs so I'm mechanically capable. I did the water pump, timing belt, new hoses, belts blah blah. So I fired it up and it drove fine until it started to get warm, a little over half. It then brought up the "check" light flashing in single intervals and would run like absolute crap.

I looked online and found that the single flashing light means its an air flow sensor malfunction so I went to the junkyard and found a near perfect looking one and bought that to switch it out. To my misfortune it still ran the same and threw the same single flashing light.

What else can I try to replace/check? I'm extremely new to these cars but i'm use to tearing apart my 91 gsx, on e85 :D, apart and I just don't know where to start with these sexy cars.

    Any ideas are welcomed!

Replace the O2 sensor and have a smoke test run to check for intake leaks.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Now again, not knowing these cars and I am planning to replace the o2 sensor as well, I don't believe an o2 sensor could cause it to run like how it does.

Let me elaborate on how it runs. It won't go above 1500 rpms and if i try to floor it the car will bog down and die. Also, if it runs for too long the I can't get the rpms up above 1000 and have to shut off and return on the car to get it to drive.

      It idles fine however.

Okay, that isn't an O2 sensor or intake leaks, though there's a good chance that intake leaks are presnet and the car probably needs an O2 sensor. It could be a bad AFM, bad DME, or a fuel system problem. The Bentely manual has a suite of fuel system tests. The best diagnostic for the AFM or DME is to swap those out with known good units.

Is there a way to test the AFM or the DME? I found an AFM that looked good and tried that but to no luck. Or is there someone who sells rebuilt/used working ones in good condition? I'll be buying a bentely manual next week but was I right on how the "check" light will flash in single intervals constantly to show that it's a bad AFM?

Being that i'm coming from dsms as soon as I felt this problem I thought it was the maf (didn't know at the time the AFM was the bmw equivalent).
