It's slow going without the special tool. Just put one side in and slowly pry the rubber around the other side.

Is it safe to use a rubber hammer?

Do it when it is hot or use a heat gun. Also get some of the synthetic lube stuff and some bondo spreaders it you don't have to tool. Took like twenty minutes to do the top portion of the rear window with all of these together, the bottom took like 1 and 1/2 hours when it wasn't hot, so that helps a lot. Good Luck!

I work at a glass shop and dude the tool is cheap maybe like 5 bucks. A tip though spray it down with windex or lube it up with something else. Soapy water works WD-40 makes a mess.

Check to see if you have a Service Auto Glass around you they should have the tool.

Also you should be safe driving around for awhile like that you will probably hear wind noises, and pray that it doesn't rain. Also any emergency braking might not be a good thing.

Let me know if this helps any.

Myabe try using a spoon, lol. As for a Hammer I don't think it will help much cause you still need to get both lips into the gasket. When you get one in the other isn't going to go in easy. With the special tool you slide the locking strip into the tool and slide the tool into the locking area of the gasket and it pulls the lips back so the insert goes in easily.

thanks Adam, after you mentioned the special tool, I pondered a little bit and made my own "special" tool out of a hanger

I basically took a hanger and made a pointed end. I then bent the pointed end to about 90 degrees so that I could use the point to help spread the gasket where the locking strip would fit. The locking strip went in between the wires of the hanger and I used the butt of a screw driver to push the locking strip in place.

Ingenious ehh? I felt like mckguyver or however the hell you spell it.
Thats exactly what the special tool does, but the tool has a roller that presses the strip in as the rubber closes around it.
