well im not sure why youre not looking in the bentley if you have 1 but at any rate,,, theres what ill call a "cut" in the outer edge of the cam sprocket. its been 4 years since i played with an m20 but that mark lines up with a mark on the head. i would study the bentley and make sure you have it right. its spelled out very clearly.
You need to temporarily reinstall the crank pulley and lower timing cover to line up the crank while make sure the cam mark lines up witht eh mark on the head.

Why? there are marks on the end of the crank and a notch on the cover there... no need to put the pulley back together.

Hmm, didn't realize there was a notch on the crank itself. Where is it? On the crank bolt?
