    heat shield

    is the flimsy thin heat shield/insulation necessary....

    It is the soft piece to left of the engine as you face the car where the exhaust exits on an m42; it goes partly on the firewall and the other half down the tranny tunnel.

    I mangled the shit out of it taking my exhaust manifold and tranny out, and now I cant find a part number for it.

    wont even bother if it doesn't matter

      It's not necessary - it does help from getting fluids and shit in there as well as getting dust from the clutch all over the lower half of the engine bay, I ended up cutting mine to fit just the affected areas, pulled the tranny back a little bit and slipping it in - it rests on the cutout for the larger inverted torx bolt and mounts with that little 8mm bolt.

      It helps with starter alignment (or so they say, but it didn't do dick for me) and I can't see any problems arising from forgoing it entirely.
