my mpg is lower than it supposed to be?

I managed to calculate my average fuel consumption over the last month..and it's not looking good

I averaged about 9.6km/ltr doing about 2/3 of downtown driving and 1/3 of highway driving.. I'm not a heavy footed either (rarely shifts at above 3.5k rpm) so I am quite surprised to the fact that I got so poor fuel mileage..considering it's got 1.6L m40 engine.

First reason that I can think of is that the car seems running slightly rich. I can smell gas (i think from exhaust) when it's idle. however there is no leak from anything and the smell goes away once I get it moving.

So my question is that, is it normal getting this kind of mileage? if not, what would be the problem?

Standard checks would be fuel pressure, O2 sensor, coolant temp sensor, and exhaust leaks. Any of those things can contribute to poor gas mileage.

Id say you lug the engine to much trying to be conservative. SO you shift early and use more pedal to keep the speed you have and accelerate.
