Recently replaced the output shaft seal on my transimission and once we got it in it kinda slid all the way to the back close to the bearing. Is this correct or should the seal be sitting at the very front of the output shift opening?

I bought the cheapest one. It had a metal flange that stopped it at the outer edge. needed to be hammered in. I can't imagine that a seal that is that loose will seal anything. but I don't know everything. -
Well it did seal at the outer edge I just accidentally tapped it a little further than the edge and then it easily slid all the way to the back of the output shaft where the bearing is.Comment

That's no good, it may start rubbing on the bearing and begin to spin.
I did the same thing, the first time.

guess the cheap one is easier to install correctly. hope it lasts a little while. looked significantly crappier than the good ones.
on a side note, what is to say the seal doesn't move while the shaft is turning?Comment
