new fuel pump and still no start

i have a 85 318i and my intake pump hasnt worked ever since i got the car (external made buzzing sound) over a year ago. Within the last couple of weeks, sometimes the car wouldnt want to start immediately (wheter hot or cold) so id let it sit for a while and it would start.

finally 2 weeks ago it wouldnt start at all, so i changed the fuel pump. I know i was supposed to test things but i was stupid. But after changing to a new pump still no start.

I cant hear the pump coming on. I jumped the relay with wire in the 30 and 87b slots, still not coming on. I checked the fuse and its good.

So what do i move on to check? Please guide me in the right direction.

my friend said try wiring the pump directly to the ignition and maybe put in a kill switch. Ijust need to get it to our new shop we are having built. I cant work on my car in my neighborhood. so i just want to move it there and work on it

    what you guys think?

I had the same type of problem with my 89 325is. I don't know exactly how the 85 318s are set up but mine turned out to be the wiring harness for the fuel injection system. The main connector on the 325s commonly gets corroded. On our cars it is located under the throttle body on the driver side of the engine bay. Try looking around for something like that. If you find it unplug it and clean it off and plug it back in.

have you checked to see if you are getting any power to the fuel pump at all? i would check that first. if you get power to the fuel pump, then go check to make sure you are getting power to the relay, if no power to the relay, then go to the module. you have to start at the problem, and work your way back.

thats what im going to do later on today.

but are there any sensors that if they fail would stop the car from starting, like maybe the coolant temp sensor, etc.

ok i know im getting spark, because if i leave the car alone for a day (leave for work in the morning and try to start at night, it will fire then die immediately after. so i know its gettng very small amounts of fuel, but my pump isnt turning on. so maybe will all the engine cranking its "manually" sucking gas in, or there are just small amounts left in the fuel rail from when it was driving.

but im going to disconnect the hose into the fuel pressure regulator and crank the engine and see if fuel is getting there.

also anyone know the easiest way to wire the pump straight to the ignition, no relays, ecu, etc.

what he said. Don't wire your fuel fump directly. chances are, it is a simple wiring issue, maybe the relay? if you have obc with code, check that you don't have broken solder joints on the connectors inside the code box. you can tell by wiggling the connectors while starting. please check that you have power at the pump. keep working backwards until you find power. if you have power make sure that you have gas, take off the line and visually verify that it pumps. that will help narrow it down.

The ignition module. It determins when the fuel injectors open/close. I think its just inside the ECU, but icould be wrong. Are you getting fuel to the fuel rail?

when the engine is cranking does a vacuum manually draw in gas into the rails? Because i know the pump isnt on, but after some time of cranking the car will fire for about 2 seconds and run out of gas and shut off.

i tested the wire from battery to the fuel relay and that gets power but nothing after the relay, so that makes me think the relay is bad.

but i use a jumper wire in 30 and 87b and still no power.

my problem is i dont know where the wires go after that, so i dont know what to check after.

tell me if this is right:

red wire from battery to fuel pump relay to ecu to intake pump to external pump???

i have a wiring diagram printed out but i dont know where the stuff is at in the car.

my next thing ill check is the ecu then the intake pumps/wires.
