    Help please....

    Hey guys,

I was driving home about two weeks ago when my car lurched and and started squealing to high hell. I stopped, opened the hood and there was a burning rubber smell, figuring it was the belts i drove the remaining two blocks to my house after i let it cool down for a couple of hours. It squealed the last two blocks but only under load, so i took it slow. When was home i looked under the hood and the belt from the alternator had snapped, and the alternator was seized.

Great, i need a new alternator and new belts. So tonight i finally have hte chance to install them. First i removed the connection to the battery, then the fan and air intake system to get them out of the way, replace the alternator, making sure to get the wiring the right way around and connecting the ground. When i reconnect the battery and try to start the car, nothing happened, all the power went out. When i tried a second time it was cranking but veeeeery slowly, and wouldnt fire. i checked the spark to the wires and there was no problem there. thinking the battery might be a POS i tried to jump the car, to no avail, still just cranking slowly.

Im not much of a car guy, but im a student and cant really afford to take it to the shop. Next step will be to check the fuses, but it got dark out, so i had to give up for the night.

A few more things, a few times when it was cranking slowly a squealing could be heard, but i couldnt make out from where. And finally, the seized alternator, which was seized before and during pulling it out mysteriously started turning again when i picked it up to reference where the ground went. Also i replaced a few of the cooling and the hoses from/to the ICV while it was parked.

Any suggestions of where to start or what to look at would be a huge help.

I'm not sure how far you drove once the car started giving you trouble, but I'll give you my best guess off the top of my head, anyone who wants to slap me and call me stupid can feel free. I would suspect that if your alternator seized up, perhaps temporarily, then you were limping home on the electricity from the battery. So, the next time you tried to start the car, your battery was simply run down and needed a recharge which your car couldn't provide until you got the engine/alternator running. Probably nothing wrong with the battery. Try hooking the battery up to a charger and see if that works. Jump starting sometimes isn't sufficient if the battery has been run down completely.

As for the squealing, if you have already replace the belt do you see anything that could be wrong with the pulleys causing the belt to not sit correctly in its track?

    Good luck man.

jump start your car again and leave it running for a little while, the battery probably just needs to recharge and regain the energy. i just recently replaced my alternator and my e30 wudnt start but after i jumped it and left it on for like 20 minutes it was good to go
