Check Panel and SRS Question (not the usual reset q)

After purchasing a 91 318iS with the blank check panel and driving it home, I had some minor things to fix before getting it on the road. The blank check panel was unfortunately missing the plastic cover, so all I could see were the bulbs, but none were blinking or solid on the original ride home.

One of the things I had to replace was the driver's side seat belt. After getting the new one in, and doing a few other things (new fluids in engine, trans and diff) as well as replacing the shifter linkage and driveshaft) and starting the car, I can now see a flashing light (3rd spot from the top, but sicne there are only 2 bulbs, it's the botton one - wires Violet and Browm/Black) and then the light becomes solid and from what I am seeing with a search, this is the SRS light. I know this cannot be reset unless I go to the dealer or find someone with it.

My question is what could have been moved around or faulty in the system to cause this light to trip?

I understand that the light is showing a temporary interrupt and does not necessarily mean taht the SRS/Airbag is non-functional but I do not want to disable the system or remove the airbag.

Does anyone have any idea as to what could have happened or a few things to check?

Side question - where is the front crash sensor location? I have a monir coolant leak and I'm concerned that it may have killed that sensor, but that's a longshot.

The front crash sensors are located on top of the wheel wells near the strut tower.

If you've got coolant up there you have a problem :roll:

Well, it's not that then.

I didn't see any harness or connector on seat belt mechanisn, only the recepticle on the seat, which I never touched.

I was under the car moving things around, but nothing that should have related to the SRS system.

The front crash sensors are located on top of the wheel wells near the strut tower.

If you've got coolant up there you have a problem :roll:

my SRS warning light switched on after making a sharp u-turn, likely wrecking the wires/clockspring in the steering column area. I am not sure how all that works though.

In my search on several forums, I cam across a similar issue where several people reported tripping the SRS at autox and the reason was the wires binding in the wheel.

Bumping this thread bc I have the same question. I pulled my airbag wheel to reclock it after putting in a new rack. The SRS light remains lit now. What do I look for inside the hub?

If you have the light on, only the tool can reset it, even if you reconnect everything.

There is the conenction at the airbag and then there is one under the colum, in the pop-out panel.

As a follow-up, I purchased the SIR3 tool from a fellow in Japan though have yet to use it to reset the light.

Once I take care of mine, I'll be doing local resets for anyone in the area for a few bucks (cost of travel) to recoup a bit of the $. So, if your light is on, let me know!
