    Smoke test

I had a smoke test done the other day due to a high idle after warm up. The test showed no leaks on the intake but when the it was connected to the crank case there was a massive flow (a little thicker diameter stream of smoke than a pencil came from under the intake manifold from what looks to be the crank case breather tube. Top not bottom of tube.)Is this to be expected? Also when I park my car overnight I have a fairly substantial oil leak. It loses about 3-4 table spoons of oil. The majority of the oil is coming from the passenger side of the motor lower than the valve cover. Are these two things connected or are they seperate issues? 89 325I with 150K miles

    Thanks, Tom

That smoke from the oil return tube is intake leak. You'll have to pull the intake to replace the seals. While the intake is out and access is easy replace the oil return hose and all of the cooling system hoses under the intake. It would also be a good idea to replace the disk stick o-rings and the oil fill cap.

The oil on the passenger side could be from anywhere higher or froward on the engine. The valve cover gaskets/bungs, cam seal, main seal, oil pressure switch, oil filter adapter & oil cooler hoses and all suspects. Throughly clean the engine and watch for the first sign of oil to find the source.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
