My car starts to stall in very cold weather

It is about 5 degrees F here in Chicago. Anyway, my car is sitting out all day at school, and i get home with no running problems. It sits outside for 3 hours at work from 5pm-8pm, and it just turns off. Then, the check engine lights comes on and stays on after I start it again. I'm thinking, ok w/e. Then, I start driving and the engine just looses power. I try going above 1500 rpm and the engine nearly stalls every time. I let it warm up to ideal temperature (middle on the temp gauge), and the light goes off and I drive away fine. I'm thinking I was running way too rich, because the cold start valve was dishing out a bit too much fuel. Can anyone tell me if I'm on the right track, and if I need to, or should replace anything?

Did you run the Check Engine fault code test? If not, go here and do it, it may tell you something useful: http://www.unofficialbmw.com/repair_faqs/motronic.html
