So I have half a gas tank...

I just bought an '82 325e a few weeks ago and immediately filled the tank. The gauge was low and I only got 5 gallons in. Well since then I've been running it as low as I felt I could until the low fuel light had been on for a day or so and the gauge on empty and couldn't get very many miles out of it. (my odo doesn't work so I don't know exactly but I guess no more than 150miles.) After five or six fillups the most I can get in the car is 7 gallons. I rolled under the car the other day so inspect things and noticed a line going between the gas tanks. It was disconnected on one end and the fitting it should have screwed into looked like it was full of JB weld. I tapped both tanks, one was empty and the other full (and the gauge shows full). Does anyone have pictures/diagrams of how the fuel system is setup on an '84? Bentley is lacking and I can't find any threads on it. Is that tube the only cross over between the tanks? Do they leak often? Do the tanks themselves leak often? Seems to me the only reason someone would do this is if one of the tanks leaked.

It's one tank, kind of like a saddle over the drive shaft. yours should have a pipe connecting them underneath, so fuel will level out between the sides when out is low. I dont know about its tendency to leak though. Mine is good at 204k.

Weird, The rear most bolt holding up the empty side was missing and it flopped around a good bit. Felt like another tank but I must not have been paying that close of attention.

and yeah. Make sure the tube between to two halves is connected under the car.
