Speedo still doesn't work. Replaced speed sensor and gauge.

I fixed the damaged wiring at the speed sensor. Replaced the speed sensor. And replaced the gauge with a new one. The speedo and odo still don't work.
Is it possible I installed the sensor upside down? What else could this be?
Fuses are all good

Did you replace the whole cluster or just the speedo head?

i replaced the whole cluster.
on the original cluster i tried reflowing every solder joint on the speedo and the cluster itself. didn't work. so i replaced it with a cluster that was known for sure to work and it still doesn't work.

would placing the speed sensor upside down cause it not to work?

did you make sure the connection and plug are good going to the speed sensor. they rot sometimes being exposed and all. check to make sure you installed it properly and check for faulty wiring.

What I would want to know at this point is whether the speed signal is reaching the cluster. Than can be determined by looking at the speed signal wire with a scope while the rear wheels are in the air and turning. If the speed signal is present, you know the problem has to be related to the cluster. If not it has to be in the sensor or wiring.

i actually ran new connections when i got a new speed sensor. the wire were rotted and not connected. i ran new connections and the wiring appears to be good. i checked it all, unless it's cut inside the car somewhere.

what signal does the speed sensor put out? and which side is which? (hot vs ground) when testing it with a multimeter.

The output of the speed sensor approximates a square wave and the signal is referenced to ground. A multimeter isn't going tell you if the signal is valid. To find that out you need to see the signal on an oscilloscope.
