    Steering rack

Is it true that steering racks were steel up to 87 then aluminum?
Is one better than the other and if so why?

Will a rack from an 87 fit my 1991 with ABS and SRS?

    Thanks,
    Spencer

The rack origianlly on my 85 318i and the one in it now from my 84 325e parts car are both alluminum and 100% interchangeable even though They had different part #'s and looked slightly different it bolted right in.

It will work if you convert to front drum brakes.

Think you got ahold of some bad crack.

I just checked the latest ETK says from 86-92 all racks have the same part # so it will work.

Some racks are half steel and half alu, others are all alu.

The steel ones last a little longer.
