    Steering Wheel Removal...

Hey i'm pickup up a M-tech 1 steering wheel this weekend and i have no idea how to take off my existing steering wheel. I can't wait to get rid of my 4 spoke wheel for the new 3 spoke. Also what do i have to do to make the horn still work and such?

    Thanks guys

Take a flat head screwdriver, and pop of the center roundel. You'll know see a 19 or 22mm nut I know a 7/8th socket fits but I can't remeber the metric size. Just undo the bolt. Stick you key in the ignition and turn it to the on position, make sure your wheels are pointing straight ahead and pull striaght towards you on the wheel. It will pull right off. With the key still in the ignition slide the new wheel on and tighten down the bolt losely. now remove the key and tighten the bolt the rest of the way. The horns will still work so nothing needs to be done to them. It's an easy mod.

cool...that sounds real easy. I thought i'd have to connect a wire or two for the horn to work.

Nope there is a Plunger on the steering column which contact a metal ring built into the steering wheel. And the wires from the horns all wire onto the ring so any E30 steering wheel will go straight on and the horn will still work. Excpet the Sport steering wheel has two wires which have to be connected from the main wheel to the horn button.

That is the M-tech 1 wheel, the sport wheel has wider spokes and was one the pre87 sport models and 84 325. It uses one large Horn button in the middle instaid of smaller buttons around the edges.

yep that is the Sport wheel. I replaced my M-tech 1 with one as I like it better but it's all a Personal preference.

It's a 22mm. The bolt is a bitch to break.. or at least it was for me. I had to get a really long breaker bar to get it loose.

make sure when you put it back on you torque it down GOOD.. and check it about a week later to make sure it hasnt backed out... the one on my momo in my corrado would back out unless i really tourqed the hell outta it when reinstalling the wheel

DO NOT use an impact wrench. You can get a 22mm socket at an auto parts store for less than $4. Just get a breaker bar if you need one, and be careful not to hit yourself or more importantly, anything in the car.

I wouldn't torque it down more than specified, you don't want to damage the steering wheel bolt. I believe it's 57ft/lb. I used a torque wrench on mine to get it right and haven't had any problems since.
