Hm.. Crank the stereo, and lose engine power!

Well this is a good one....

First, I'll give a bit of background on some related wiring.

I've got my SMT6 and LC-1 hooked up to a nice fresh 12v power source right from the + terminal in the engine bay. I've turned it into a switched 12v by using a relay that's activated by the switched 12v from the stereo. Follow me? I wanted to make a new 12v source so I wouldn't be draining the other circuits in my car.

Now I don't listen to the stereo that much, but it's a simple JVC 52w deck. No amps, etc.

I turned it on yesterday, and cranked it up a bit. But in doing this I noticed the engine was hesitating a bit, and wasn't very smooth. Is the stereo draining power from my SMT6 causing it to give bad readings/values? Or are there other issues with the car? The ignition system is pretty fresh, about 8,000 kms.

I'm almost 100% sure that my relay wiring is correct. I disconnected the main 12v power, turned on the ignition, and tested if there was any power getting to the smt6. There wasn't, so I assume everything in the relay is functioning correctly.

    Any thoughts?

sounds spot on to me. try unplugging smt and then adjusting your stereo

Wire the SMT6 dirrectly and try it out. Eliminating the relay will tell if that is the problem or not.

the relay is probably only activated from a certain current, cranking up the sterio is drawing more power, passing the activation point and then it could be turning off again? or over heating...

Relays are great and needed for lights and motors.
          Many have diods in them.
The switch line from the stereo needs to go two ways. back and forth, on its own.Switch your shit another way. seperate. It deserves it own circuit.
          Remember. properly fuse everything seperately.
SMT6 units have over 650 differant wiring diagrams. I think your problem is that you have the amp in the circuit.Maybe----

Sorry I didn't reply... Never got any updates in my mailbox.
Anyways, I guess I'll try to run it up to a constant 12v and see what happens.
Is there any other good place to get a switched 12v from to hook up the relay?
