so my water pump started leaking from the shaft. i think. but upon looking at my old one i saw this hole. is it possible that coolant could leak from this? what is its purpose? kinda odd to me.-some pics:

That is a weep hole. It is after the seal, but before the bearing and its purpose is keep leaking coolant away from the bearing. Coolant getting into the bearing can rapid failure of the bearing and subsequent damage to the fan, radiator, etc.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

so when coolant leaks from the weeping hole its the sign that the water pump is bad. correct? and the hole helps protect the bearing from being completely destroyed.
thank you. my "new" water pump of 7 months is now leaking from this i believe. gahh
