    blower motor (1991 318is)

alrighty boy's this should be an easy one, im pretty sure i know what it is already, i just want some confermation. anywho. so i turn the fan to any level setting 1-4 and it usualy doesn't work, however the odd, and i mean odd time it works. every other time nothing happens. (all the fuses are ok) before somone says that. now is it the switch on the motor? or is it the actual motor, or could it be somthing else?

If you're sure that NO settings (1, 2, 3, or 4) work and the fuse (30amp, #20 I believe) isn't blown/keeps blowing then it probably is the motor itself. It could just be loose/dirty connections though. Sometimes removing the motor and just cleaning it off magically makes it work again consistently - but it probably doesn't have much longer to go before it's actually dead in this case.

If you want to do it yourself, you can buy a used one and set aside 45 minutes to swap them out. I've switched out the blower motor at least 8 times in E30s before so I can do it in about 15 minutes. But if you've never done it before and all the screws/fasteners are where they're supposed to be under the hood, 45 minutes seems about right. I think brand new blower motors are like $180... used are always way cheaper.

Be careful installing the new one - if you crack the "squirrel cage" fins then the whole thing is pretty much useless. Even a little crack will expand when the motor is on full speed, then basically explode the plastic fins. The Bentley Manual has decent instructions on the whole procedure.

PM Scott ("Bimmerfanatik"). I think he has an extra blower motor laying around.

alrighty, well i can get the motor new for like 28$:) (i work at lordco auto parts) its an ac delco part, im not sure how long it will last but for 28$ who cares. . and yeah i was figuring about 1.5 hrs for the work, as i like to be casual, take brakes and my neighbors always drop by and say hi

The resistor pack could be dirty, thats what it was on my dad's car.

Or it could be like my car, we pulled the motor and it was all corroded and frozen. Like we hooked it up directly to a car battery, kept switching polarity and it still wouldn't move.

My resistor pack was bad/rusty/corroded but my fan still worked on the #4 setting. It would sometimes work on the other 3, but even after cleaning it it would eventually stop and only work on #4.

It's not a fun job on M42s, get a used original one. They usually don't go out so you would probably be safer this way than with the ACD one.

well id go for that but it'l be hard to find a used one, as finding an e30 in the scrap yards here is a pain in the ass... ill pull it out and clean it first and go from there, thanks guys

                Keep this thread updated.

I take personal interest when I hear about blower motors acting funny in E30s. I have had so many problems with them before...
