these past few weeks i've been smelling a gas leak coming from my 89 325is. i didn't notice any major leak so my first instinct was to check the near the fuel tank/filter. i noticed some tears in the fuel hoses at the fuel filter, so i decided to replace those hoses and filter at the same time.
yesterday i tried to change the fuel filter and accompanying fuel hoses i read on these forums that 8x13mm fuel hose is required, but 5/16" is acceptable. after installing 5/16" marine grade (coast guard approved?) fuel hose i ran into trouble when fitting the hoses onto the fuel filter nipples and fuel lines. the plastic coating on the inside of the hose was creating a jam causing poor fitment. i used a step drill bit to cut out the plastic for about an inch or so and blew the remains out with an air blow gun. i finally managed to get the hose to fit on, but alas, the leak remained.
my friend suggested cutting more hose and using snap ring pliers and silicone to mate the hoses. i did as instructed, and after being sprayed in the face 3 times with pressurized gasoline finally managed to fit all the hoses to the filter and tightened all the clamps. alas, there is still bubbling and slow leaking!
do i really need to use 8mm hose? it's an extremely tight fitment but i was told 5/16" is almost identical to 8mm. i oriented the filter with the arrows facing away from the fuel lines so i'm pretty sure that's not the issue.
do you guys have any other ideas?
thanks!
