    AC compressor is smoking!

I've been struggling all summer to get my AC working, and after working on it for months i thought i finally had it. I added some stop-leak to make sure there were no more small leaks around seals or something like that, and proceded to charge the system. It pulled the 24 oz of R12 out of the cans, and got to a total pressure of about 30 lbs. But there was nothing at all in the sight glass, even though it was blowing cold. Then the compressor started smoking! i just had it charged with oil, so i don't think that's it. But now i'm worried that i totally killed it! help please! what could cause these bizarre symptoms? It gets very humid here in the winter, and it would be nice to have AC for defogging the windows.

sounds like you are SOL. If i were you, i would highly consider finding a new/used compressor(one that has NOT had the "stop leak" or anything like that), getting a new reciever dryer, maybe a new condensor(i'll have one for sale here soon) and back flush your system. Go ahead and just get it converted to R134a. Its really hard to work on AC stuff at home unless you have the proper equipment. And just an FYI, i wouldnt be using the stop leak stuff. Most shops will put an identifier to tell if its 100% r134 or 100%r12. Most wont touch your car unless its 100% all or nothing. I know its not what you want to be hearing, but i would seriosly consider getting just about all new components. I wish I read this earlier, I just ripped all my stuff out, could have sent you a good compressor and a good condensor.
