    dash problems

hey guys...on the way home from work today my bimmer gave me its first problems....all of the sudden i smelled burnig wires...saw smoke from right where the steering enters the dash, my instant mpg gauge will only read 0 and above 40 mpgs and my speedo, odo, and trip stopped working but my tach, fuel gauge and water temp gauge work fine....has this happened to anybody else...just got home and about to tear the dash apart

Don't pull your dash out. I think your SI board has bit the dust. Replace it by taking the instrument cluster out.

There is only one company that I know of...Programma. Pelican is selling the Programma board for about $140 with core exchange. Post your message on this board to find a cheaper alternative. I cannot remember the member who has it, but he was willing to sell it to me for about $65 (too bad, I already bought the Programma). You can also go the Ebay route, but the cheapest that I could find was @ $165.

Yeah, I am pretty sure that you can drive without the SI board. I have seen posts where the SI is deleted from the car and the pins jumpered to get the temp gauge working...can't find that post at the moment.
