Looking into buying an e30, seller on CL states the car idles badly and then stalls out completely. Fuel on the plugs after he tries to restart the engine. Claims it needs a new MAF, which I'm understanding as the AFM.. He has changed the temp sensors and it didn't fix the problem. Any other ideas? The car is perfect inside and out but has this engine issue and the price is right if I can figure out what's wrong with it.

If there is fuel on the plugs, it would seem he is running too rich.
When a car starts, it is in open loop where it ignores the o2 sensor and runs richer to help "warm up the o2 sensor" and it increases idle to help avoid stalling. So some richness is normal on cars.
e30s have a mass volume air sensor, its a little different then a traditional maf.
Check the electrical connection and clean that out, see if it helps anything. Order a bentley service manual, it has a lot of trouble shooting, if i had it with me id take a gander.

Fuel on the plugs after a failed attempt to start doesn't necessarily mean that the engine is running rich. It may just mean that the engine didn't fire to burn off the fuel.
This could be a problem with AFM, but it is just as likely to be something else. Most of the causes of this are pretty easy to fix and not expensive. Though finding the cause(s) can be a bit laborious. The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
