Well it turns out Jordan might have been right. I was doing a U turn today and the same sticky wheel symptoms returned.

I'm in the market for a Z3 steering rack now.

All you do is remove the protective plastic shroud and undo one of the PS hose screws like in this picture. The PS system is closed and wasn't designed to be changed, however the oil does get old. Don't worry about air getting trapped, it will all flush out naturally as you refill.

If you need a picture writeup on how to change the PS pump and PS hoses, its available on e30tech provided by yours truly.

I believe the steering rack is my problem even though I am not experiencing any leakage of fluid.

same for me, changed out reservoir and fluid, still sticks

As time went on, the factory developed the car each year, making it faster, more comfortable, and capable of handling at higher speeds.
You don’t want this. You want the trickiest, most dangerous, oldest model you can find. Only then can you prove to the world that you’re a man.

sucks. I went to the junkyard today and saw a bunch of big bumpered e30's. I didn't have time or the tools to pull any e30racks though. Guess I'll have to make another trip in the summer.

Madjurgen, picknpull over at i30 and loop 12 has a bunch of e30s there. New ones beginning of every month.
