    Free play in tranny

Yeah, i know there is a tranny forum, but i posted their recently and no reply

There seemed to be some free play in my driveline which was accompanied by a clunking noise. It would happen sometimes when i would engage or disengage the clutch, and when i would get go from off throttle to on in the lower gears. Any one else have this?

I jacked the rear up and got under the car and had it in gear and rolled the wheels back and forth and figured out the noise was comming from the tranny. I recently changed the tranny fluid to redline D4 ATF (thats what the 318is is supposed to have) and i guess it increased. SHould i jack up one side and fill the tranny with some more fluid?

How are your rear subframe bushings? Are they resting on the plate on the bottom yet? They can make that noise too.

I have the same problem although mine sounds less severe than yours.

I've also heard that it could be the subframe bushings.

Could tranny mounts be bad on a !00,000 mile e30, considering it's 20 years old? Also, i suspect the previous owner of my car was girl

Tranny mounts won't make that noise. You probably need subframe bushings at 135k, and shock mounts at 100k.

Play in the driveline suprisingly doesn't make nearely as much noise as subframe bushings and shock mounts.

it will do it a little when i let the clutch out just enough to put tension on the drivetrain, but not move or stall the car. also when i just turned it off and put it in gear and rolled the car back and forth

Did you check the flex disk? It could be shot and make a clunking noise when accelerating.
