535K miles?!? Have the internals ever been rebuilt? (Pistons, rings, bearing races etc)

If he has spark his timing belt is still in tact.

That is very impressive. In that case, pull out the spark plugs, and put a small squirt of oil in each cylinder. Put them back in, and put the car back together (ready to run) And then go ahead and crank it over. If it starts, your rings are shot, and its time for either an engine rebuild, or an engine replacement. Let me know what Happens, I'm curious now hah.

For everyone who's speculating, this is a very poor mans compression test.

autozone/napa etc also lend compression testers. May be a good idea too.

I've used the oil trick before and does work, but its nice to know the actual numbers

How did the car run last? Like did you drive it home and everything was 100% then you turned off the car?

I wonder why it started after you bought a new alternator? I'd have to look at the schematics.
