Well Im making a list of things to fix on the E30, AND a/c is one. When I bought the car the guy said it had been converted to r-134... well it worked for a year or so and quit.. I recharged it and it leaked down. Well I just quit using it for a while then all the sudden the compressor was making a terrible noise so I cut the belt. I want to get it working again.. How do i know if it has truly been converted the right way. What should I do to fix it right? thanks - Hunter

Noise from the compressor when you weren't using the AC could be a bad compressor clutch. The clutch can be replaced, but if the compressor is original & worn it probably makes more sense to the complete unit. The next task would be to find and fix the leak. That may be a simple and easy as replacing all the o-rings that seal the lines. Or the leak could be bad line, in the evaporator, or condenser. Then replace the drier, evacuate the system, and charge it.The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
