Any tips on removing fan clutch?

I am trying to install a new waterpump on my dads e34 535i. I have my 32mm wrench on the nut and turn clockwise, and it spins everything. What methods do you guys recommend doing in order to prevent the entire pulley from spinning, how can I lock it down? I tried hitting it with a hammer, but it doesnt break it loose. I need some ideas.

hold the fan and turn the nut w/ the wrench. maybe try a block of wood to prevent the fan from turning.

If its the same as M20 engine... I remove 2 of the pulley bolts so I can fully fit the wrench on the fan-nut. Next, take a smaller wrench and counter hold (or prop the wrench against something) one of the pulley bolts while you loosen the fan bolt.

Okay guys, I just got it done. Thanks for the help anyways. As for jht3's advice, the fan spun independently in relation to the nut, therefore that didnt help. I took a pair of channel lock pliers and held the pulley in place, as I turned the nut and it broke loose.

new issue, i dont know if i messed up when tightening the alternator belt, but when we attemped to start the car, it struggled a bit. then when it finally turned on, the belt snapped. Both the alternator belt and the power steering belts snapped. I am afraid I screwed something up, but dont know what. The belts needed replacing anyways from the looks of them, but is there anything that I couldve done wrong to cause that to happen besides overtightening the belts?

mm im gunna assume you over tightened the belts, i did this and it wouldnt even turn over. Loosened them up and it was best kind. I had brand new belts tho so thats probably why they didnt just break when i tried to turn the car over.

i hope its just an overtightening issue mitch, thanks for ur input though. my dad bought the belts today, so ill install em tomorrow. its hard working on cars with a broken leg, my cast runs half way up my thigh.
