so, for the past 3 years every once in a while i get this loud clicking noise from under the hood. it might happen for a day or 2 only certain times, not all the time and maybe once or twice a year. doing it again now. never did it before at an idle so i could never get out of the car and check it out till today. turns out it's the cruis control. if i put tension on the cable the clicking changes its tone. my question is, does it sound like a bad cable or the unit it self. it stops as soon as you depress the clutch the least little bit. like the amount you need to depress it to knock it off of the cruise when driving.

the unit and cable are one assembly as far as i know. When you purchase the cruise control motor the cable comes with it and does not appear to me separate. Its seems strange that its clicking even when its off. Sounds like its trying to pull on the throttle cable but can't get a grip. I bought a used unit from Levent at Guten. Does the cruise control work when activated?sigpic

Cruiae works 90% ofthe time. Its def the cruise. Which cable is part of the unit? The one to the stalk or the bowden cable to the tb? Also clicke w/o engine running but key on sometimes tooLast edited by long tall eta; 04-01-2012, 01:42 PM.sigpic

Old thread I know, but this is the only one I found.
My cruise control box is making the same noise, I pulled fuse 6 last night to stop it but that knocks out brake lights too, and that's no good!
Since I've owned the car the cruise control cable has been just hanging and not attached to the throttle, I'm guessing for this reason, and has never made any noise until once a week ago and then last night off and on pretty often. The only way to get it to stop is to ride the brake just enough to turn on the lights, or push the cruise control stock forward, but let off either and it comes back.
While the cruise control box is making a racket it's also pulling the cable in, which would actuate the throttle and run me off a cliff. Is there some kind of feedback it's supposed to be getting from the idle switch or throttle position sensor? What else could I look in to as a problem? Some kind of TPS or EOS inside the cruise control unit? I noticed it looks sealed up pretty well and even the plug isn't removable. If I put the cable back on will it try to kill me? Any known fixes?
Thanks -kevin
