    Steering wheel nut

I've got a couple questions. First what size is the nut holding the steering wheel on, I remember last time I changed a steering wheel I couldn't find a store that carried a metric size that big so I had to use a standard equivelent. Any idea's what standard size they are close to? Finaly, can you put a nonairbag wheel on a car that came equipted with an air bag? Thanks

I believe it is a 22mm. I know it is the same size as the o2 sensor because I used the same socket for both. And about the nonairbag wheel, yes you can. You need some sort of washer or spacer but it will work. The turn signal etc stalks will be close to the steering wheel so you may need to bend them if you don't like them that way. A lot of people do this and those that have may be able to give you a more detailed explaination.

I have a '91 with the airbag column. I bought it with an airbag wheel and I put on the Mtech 1 wheel. The nut is a 22mm. That is slightly smaller than a 29/32". There are 4 torx bolts on the back side of the wheel. Undo those and the airbag will come out. Then take off the nut and the wheel. There will be a 12mm spacer under the wheel. Leave it there. Get another spacer or make one the same size out of washers. Put the new wheel on top of the original spacer. Then put another 12mm spacer on top of the new wheel. Then use 2 locking washers on top of eachother. Last is the new locking nut. Tighten it down and youre good to go. The signal/wiper/cruise stalks are all now close to the steering wheel. At first I noticed it, but after a while I cant even tell. They arent close enough to be bothersome, at least IMO. If you have any questions, ask away.

I find that during hard autox runs, the stalks are too close. It doesn't bother me though.

During autox runs they can easily get in the way. You just need to get used to them and get a feel for where they are. I havent had a problem with them. They ARE close though so if you are considering doing this you need to be aware. The stalks can probably be bent farther away from the wheel though.

I'm sure you already know, but be sure to pull the battery cable before you try to pull the steering wheel.
