    What kind of piping to use for air intake

    I have a 318i and the AFM is really close to the motor. I want to move the AFM towards the front of the car so I can use a bracket I have to hold the AFM so I can use a K&N cone filter that I already have, I'm going to build a heat shield/box for it as well. My question is, what kind of piping do I use to extend the rubber elbow coming from the throttle body? Plastic/ABS doesn't seem like it will hold up well. Thanks.

    Plastic is best, metal will soak up heat more.

        This is in the future for me as well. One question, what does afm stand for?
        I have a kAndN filter but i need to build the tubing aswell. My friend did it on his 320 and it works nicely.

          afm = air flow meter

            i wonder if your low or high end will change by making the afm farther away from the throttle body, let me know how it works out. my understanding is that manufacturers try to put the afm as close to the throttle body as possible for tuning purposes, but i could be wrong.

              i see your point. the afm senses how much air is going in right? so wouldn't it tell the computer to change the af mixture at a certain point? (like a delay for when to change the mixture.) but we could both be wrong.

                ok i looked into it for you guys, this is what would happen: by moving the afm further away from the throttle body you will gain a couple more cubic feet of air mass that the car does not know about, thus creating poor thottle response. ALSO you will lose a considerable amount of vacum, which would cause lots of problems. my sugestion is to leave the afm where it is and make a pipe going from your cold air directly to your afm intake side. just my 2 cents.

                    soo would the opposite also be true? in other words, if the afm were closer to the TB, then would u get better throttle response?
