    Strange Electrical? Problem

'85 325e, completely stock. Picked this car up a couple of months ago, and have had the strangest issue with it. I think it's electrical, but I'm not entirely too sure.

Basically, the car seems to have a "short" somewhere. However, it doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason. I've tried searching multiple forums, but have yielded no real results.

The car will begin to actually smoke from different parts on the dashboard (usually underneath the steering column or the air vents just above the radio). Now, the car had an aftermarket radio in it, and I'm curious, is it possible that the radio wiring has a short somewhere? I've also encountered this problem when the car is under hard acceleration. A bit of smoke pours out, and the car dies almost instantly. On some occasions, it will start back up right away, others it won't. Normally, the car has absolutely no trouble cranking, and the motor seems very strong. I don't believe this is a common thing, and am having serious trouble investigating it because I don't know how to make the problem occur. It's almost random. Any thoughts?

Improperly installed electronics could easily be the cause of this. My recommendation is that you remove the dash, open the wire bundles and find/repair the damaged wiring. Pull the radio and revert the wiring to OE configuration. Then properly re-install the radio.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

After a little bit of investigation today, I discovered a wiring mess. Electrical tape everywhere, and plenty of exposed wires. It's raining now, but I suppose the first thing on the agenda tomorrow is to start pulling the dash off. Thanks for the help so far, will update eventually.

Smoke? How much smoke that shit cant be good to inhale, in the past Ive had a couple of real assholes work on my car and they used masking tape where they should have used electrical tape, long story short caused a nice amount of smoke and a nice short killed my drivers side window
