    91 318is - Fuel Expansion Tank Delete

    Hey guys,

I want to delete the fuel expansion tank. Most cars I've dealt with only have supply/return/vent where the vent goes to the charcoal canister. Often I remove charcoal and just vent that hose to atmosphere.

Is there any reason why I can't do that here? If not, which hoses can I delete and which one is the actual vent line? Is it the 'fabric braided' large diameter line on the p-side near the pump/sender?

    Thanks

I tried doing that on my race car and quickly found it to be a bad idea. If the tank is filled with cold fuel on a hot day, it can leak out of the vent when the fuel expands or when turning left. There is no advantage to deleting the expansion tank and good reason not to.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Thanks for the reply.. but I assume I can remove the charcoal canister? If so, can I just cap/terminate the line that ran to it?

      Cheers

You can remove the charcoal canister. Plug the nipple on the throttle body where the evap valve connects and terminate the hose from the canister to the rear of the car with a filter. The canister is the fuel system vent.

Cool, Thanks for the info, I will just leave the expansion in place as you suggest (sounds like way more hassle than it is worth).
