    5w 40 on a 200k engine

Was wondering if there would be any type of damage, done? the local mechanic ended up putting synthetic 5w30 on my car, the miles on it now are about 200k, should i be worried?

    What engine is it?

And no, it should be basically fine, it just may have burned a ton if it's an m20.
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

Has the car run synthetic for awhile now? Or have you used conventional for its life?

If youve used conventional be prepared for the oil leaks...synthetic oil has more detergents in it, if ran throughout the cars whole life the engine will stay cleaner, but when you used conventional you have some gunk buildup on seals and gaskets, nothing bad just gunk...switch to synthetic and now your going to clean the whole inside of that engine (which will quickly blacken your synthetic btw) and now that those seals and gaskets are clean there most likely going to start leaking.

So in closing...switch back to conventional.

I switched to 10w40 full synthetic. I haven't had leaks for the last 3k miles. My oil looks super black, but that's cause synthetic removes the gunk that's been building up due to conventional.

If you have old seals and gaskets, you might encounter a lot of leaks because the gunk was pretty much the only thing holding the oil in. I however, have about 210k when I switched to synthetic, and I had no problems. I'm pretty sure it had something to do with my PO however.

If it doesn't leak, keep it. Synthetic is always better

The problem is not so much convential vs syn. The issue is 5/30-5/40 in a car with 200000 miles on engine. So during driving and not so hot days you should be fine on oil pressure, however in low speed/idle situations or extremly hot days dont be surprised if your oil light starts to flicker. Reason being as we all know oil gets thinner as it gets hotter and on a 200000 mile engine that IS going to have loose bearing clearences you can run into an pressure issue.

                I wouldn't run it personally, I'd swap to 20w50.
