    Compressor switch in-line?

I have a question for all the R134a conversion guys.

Am I correct to assume the threaded 2-wire plug on the outside of the A/C compressor is an in-line switch for the low side of the compressor?

I need to replace the 2-wire plug, but fear loosing the charge if I replace this without correctly vacuuming the charge out.

The pressure switch is in the dryer, not the compressor. I can't remember if a 91 has separate low and high pressure switches or a single combined switch. I rather think the latter.

I can get the compressor to engage when I touch the broken wire to what's left of the broken lead on the compressor. The low side lines get cold and will blow cold air. I assume it's an in-line pressure switch because it's threaded and the above happens. Still I hope I'm wrong.

I've tried soldering the wire to the few 18awg strands dangling out of the switch with no more than a day's worth of pothole luck.

I've never seen a pressure switch in the compressor, but there is pair of wires from the compressor for the clutch.

Good point. The compressor definitely clicks when I touch wires and can tell it puts a load on the engine. This must be the clutch engaging. That gives me a lot more confidence that it's not a pressure switch. I'm going to have at it this weekend, I'll be sure to report one way or another. Thanks Jim.

I think that this [B]is[B] a pressure switch. Is this a replacement compressor - not OE? Compressors on other makes of cars do have the pressure sensor in the them. You might try loosening it a smidgen and listen for a hiss.
