S50 Shifting sound

Hell,o I know this is very vague so I'm not asking for a miracle answer. I'm just looking for a list of possible reasons.

Whenever I shift and give the car a tiny amount of gas from 1st to 3rd gear I hear a clunk near the rear of the car. It makes a clunk near the shifter but I assume that's me shifting. After I shift I hear a clunk in the rear. I have checked to make sure my diff is well bolted and that the half-shafts were well attached. I though that maybe if those were loose it would clunk in the rear after I have shifted and pressed the gas.

I don't seem to hear it in 4th and 5th. Im using a ucc shifter kit, an e36 m3 5 speed and an e36 drive shaft. Roadster z3 torsen diff.

Im not saying this is it for sure, but my GF car made a clunk noise like that. We ignored it for along time and eventually swap the transmission(g250) out for a zf and the noise never happened since. I would of swore that the rear end was going out with how it sounded like it came from back there.

sounds like op doesnt have a g260. are the diff bushings good? how about your guibo? csb? driveshaft u joints?

I did understand that Im just saying in her case the noise and feel of the clunk from the rear end came from the transmission. We went over everything else very thoroughly. I was assuming he already went over the obvious, but you are right those are the more than likely issues if you have not already checked them thoroughly.

oh alright. well if the noise is truely coming from the shifter area, its gotta be guibo, CSB, U joint. thats about all i can think of.

I would say u-joints. If they have any play in them, they will clunk.

Thanks for the response guy. About six months or less I replaced the CSB. I inspected the driveshaft and it seemed to be in good condition. I will also lean on the u joints being a problem though. I was driving today and realized that the harder I gassed it, the more clunk I got. I also got the clunk when letting go. Im assuming that since the u joints take the torque this might be it.

I will ask the PO if he has done any work to the shaft. I really don't want to take the shaft out the car again. Such a pain in the ass.

Is putting the car in gear and trying to turn the driveshaft by hand on the car a valid way of checking if the u-joint has play?
