    e36 steering rack conversion...

Is there a really big difference between the '98 and the '95 steering racks in the e36 m3???

i can get a '98 for like 100 off brand new... so i guess the question is...if the '95 steering rack is better is it $100 better???

    thanx

As far as i know its only 3 turns as opposed to the 3.5 turns on the later models. YOu also need the different mounts and the steering knuckle.(i think)

Don't fret man, I have a 98 rack on my car and couldn't be happier. Anything from an E36 will be an improvement over the stock E30 rack.

I heard the same thing but heard it was a pain in the ass to install, didnt know anyone who acutally had one and wanted to the least amount of headaches.

I did discover that zionsville motorsports makes kits for all of the swaps.

If you're going through the effort to swap in an e36 rack, I'd pay the extra to get the '95 m3 or a z3 rack. Even the '98 rack will be an improvement, but I'd hold out for the '95 or the Z3.

Installing the z3 rack is the same work as installing any of the e36 racks. The fitment is the same. The z3 rack is no more pain in the ass.

                    I have installed and used the z3, '95 m3, '97 m3, and e30 m3 racks in my e30s over the years.

                      Stock E30 rack = 4.0 turns lock-to-lock
                      E30 M3 rack = 3.5 turns lock-to-lock
                      All E36 rack (except '95 M3) = 3.2 turns lock-to-lock
                      '95 M3 rack = 3.0 turns lock-to-lock
                      Z3 rack = 2.7 turns lock-to-lock

Now was that so hard? :-)

Most common, and big improvement over the stocker. Can't wait to install mine.
