    Clutch noise

My car has suddenly developed a bit of a whirring noise that begins when I depress the clutch pedal, and it continues until I relase the pedal and the clutch engages. Other than the noise, it seems to engage like normal. From looking online and in the bentley, it sounds like it could be a problem in the release bearing, though I really wouldn't know. If this is the case - what would be involved in repairing it, and is it alright to drive with it in this condition for a bit? Thanks

So it makes the noise when you push the pedal all the way to the floor? Or just when you start to put pressure on it?

If it is making noise when its pressed all the way, sounds like pilot bearing. But if its also making noise when there's slight pressure on it, sounds like throwout(aka release) bearing.

I wouldn't drive that long on it if its making noise. Mine lasted maybe a week before they blew up and i had to drive from Texas to Kansas w/o a clutch.

I have an 87 325 and might buy an IS. I have not seen the car in person or driven it yet, but have seen some pics(nice). Any way, the guy who is selling it said that there is a noise in the clutch. i bet it is the same thing bimmer8604 discribed. Does anyone know how much a shop would charge to have the throw out bearing replaced or the clutch replaced. i never had this done before. i just want to know what i am getting into with this car. thanks.

shops charge about 5 hours to do a clutch, plus parts. Parts could run as high as $300 for a new cluch, throwout bearing and pressure plate. At $90 an hour, that's $750 for a new clutch.
