Changing the trans & diff oil

What's involved with this? Simple as opening the drain plug and refilling (does the diff have a drain plug also, or do you need to take the cover off)? Or are there any filters to change or other things? Can it be done without the car be lifted? If not, can it be done lifting either the front or the rear but not both?

    Thanks

    1) Take out the fill plug from both the tranny and diff.
    2) Take out the drain plugs and drain them both
    3) Replace the drain plugs and fill them with lube (you'll probably need a pump for it.)
    4) Screw the fill plug back in.

I used Reline MTL and Redline Gear Oil

i dont know about the tranny.

but to empty the diff just unscrew the bottom drain pug with a hex socket. Once it drians plug the bottom back up and open the top and fill'er up.

both the plugs are located on the diff's cover.

take out the fill plugs first. it'll drain faster and you don't have to worry about not being able to get them out once you've drained the fluid

Great, thanks. Yeah, I've got Redline MTL GL-4 and 75w-90 (i think) gear oil.

Put some Redline 5w30 motor oil in the engine and you'll increase your mpg by about 5 or so

I actually ran Redline 15w-50 in it for 15k miles, but with my oilpan gasket leak, I was adding a little more than I wanted to. So I went back to dino, 20w-50 every 5K. With the dino oil I add between a 3/4 and full quart between oil changes. With the redline I was adding a little more than that. I actually played with the idea of really never having to change the oil (just the filter), since by the time I hit 15k, I had almost added the equivelant of an oil change. :)

BTW, it did start easier/better, ran cooler, etc. maybe if I keep going I'll talk myself back into it...

15w50 is pretty thick, especially for the winter. But if you're having leakage with that, don't even think about 5w30... you'll be adding twice as much.

In case I don't have the hex sock, what size is it?

                  Thanks

I'm not sure about yours, but mine was a 10mm allen wrench for the diff and 17mm allen wrech for the tranny

the diff and the tranny are both pretty easy. as mentioned before, just unscrew the drain plug and fill.

A simple trick to safe money on a pressure pump is to just drill two holes onto the cap of the redline bottle. Then stick two rubber hoses through them and attach one end to a regular air pump. Stick the other hose into the fill hole and your all set. :)

Going to do the differential this weekend, do I just keep adding until it spills out the fill hole?
