    fuel pump removal

On an '88 325iS, can it be replaced by removing the the rear seat and accessing it from there, or does the tank have to come out? thanks.

depends on which pump yout alking about, but the one in the tank is do-able by removing the seat.

        fuel pump

The older E30's I think 87 back (I'm not positive) had 2 a transfer pump in the tank and another that I guess you'd call an "in line" pump behind the tank in front of the rear wheel. I have and 89 325i and no sign of any "in line pump".
Just pop my back seat out unscrew a few nuts, and lift it out.

1988 and up only have a single intake pump. You can remove it in the car from under the seat.

87 and down have dual pumps.

              1) Pop out rear seat
              2) Pull back padding/cover
              3) Take out 4 screws holding the cover (cover is black thing on pass side)
              4) Pull off lines (be careful, some gas may be in the lines)
              5) Twist pump to remove
              6) Pull out pump carefully

To put back in do steps in reverse.

I have a 1990 ic. When I twist the pump and lift up, I can only get about an inch out of it. It seems to get stuck. I tried wiggling the shit out of it in every direction. Still won't come out.

You need to remove the fuel sender first, then the pump assemble twists out.
